Gifts to individuals and families

A short-term grant recipient
Mark*, aged 43, had spent several months going in and out of hospital with heart failure. He could not continue to work as a carpenter and his wife stopped her work in a shop so that she could care for her husband. The Community Fund awarded a short-term grant to help the couple adjust to the loss of their wages whilst a local advice centre helped them to claim the correct state benefits. “Thank you very much for your help over the last six months. It took the pressure off us so that we didn't have to worry about the heating being on extra in the winter months while we were waiting for benefits to be sorted.”

A gift recipient
Ellen* is 28 and has a life-threatening heart condition. She found climbing the steps to her old flat difficult to manage and was re-housed in a ground floor housing association flat. Ellen received a statutory grant to help with the cost of furnishing her new home. She stretched this grant as best she could but it did not cover everything she needed. The Community Fund helped her to buy a frost free fridge/freezer. “Thank you very much for the frost free fridge/freezer, it has made a wonderful difference in my life.”

Funding for organisations

South Gloucestershire Disability Action Group acts as a collective voice for local disabled people. The Group holds regular meetings and makes representations to the council and other organisations on behalf of disabled people. The Group produces a quarterly newsletter which informs its members of activities and services. The Community Fund was pleased to award South Gloucestershire Disability Action Group £800 towards the cost of printing and distributing this newsletter.

The Harbour provides free counselling and psychotherapy to people affected by a life-threatening illness such as cancer, Multiple Sclerosis or cystic fibrosis. The Harbour receives half of its funding from statutory sources and needs to fundraise for the rest. The Community Fund was pleased to support the Harbour's vital work with a grant of £1,500.
